Celebrating Black History Month with Leyton’s Elders

The AC Elders sing 'Dis Long Time Gal'

Thanks so much to the African and Caribbean Elders group for inviting me to join their 2006 Black History Month celebrations. I spent a wonderful night listening to poetry, singing old time Caribbean songs (songs I’ve known since childhood, thanks to my Caribbean mum) and I also learnt more about Black History and the positive contributions Black people have made to Britain. I’m backing Jon Cruddas for Deputy Leader

With Labour Party Deputy Leadership candidate Jon Cruddas MP

Dagenham MP Jon Cruddas (pictured with me above) launched his campaign for the Labour Party Deputy Leadership earlier tonight. I was really pleased to be there to show my support.

Jon Cruddas is a breath of fresh air. Here’s a candidate that wants to debate ideas and policy, has no baggage, is not ashamed of our party’s trade union link and also – and most importantly – has his feet placed firmly on the ground.

London Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron leads Barking's anti BNP protest

On Wednesday, I accompanied London’s Deputy Mayor Nicky Gavron and Battle of Cable Street veteran Max Levitas to the protest, which was the second demonstration since the election of twelve BNP councillors, to Barking and Dagenham Council, back in May. The BNP are now Barking and Dagenham’s council’s official opposition party. Continue reading “Barking and Dagenham say No to the BNP!”
